An "Ah So" Question

Or English "ah, so" [not from Japanese!] ....

Charlie Chan was not portrayed as Japanese in any way, shape, or form: I
think he was supposedly an American, of Chinese origin or ancestry. But
there was also Mr. Moto, supposedly of Japanese antecedents, played by
Peter Lorre in 1930's movies. Maybe he said "Ah so"?
