BACKLASH, FRONTLASH, SIDELASH, SMEARLASH

15 July 1964, NYHT, pg. 22, cols. 1-3--_The White Backlash_.

19 August 1964, NYHT, pg. 24, cols. 3-5--_Lash and Counter-Lash_.

6 September 1964, NYHT, pg. 15, cols. 2-5--_Analyzing "Frontlash" vs. "Backlash" Vote_.

8 September 1964, NYHT, pg. 21, cols. 1-4 cartoon caption--"--and one sidelash...he doesn't give a rap for either candidate."

22 October 1967, NYHT, pg. 1, col. 7--_"Smearlash" Hits GOP--President_.

LESSER OF TWO EVILS

Republican vs. Democrat, of course. Choose the "lesser of two evils." Also called "the evil of two lessers." Fred should have something on both. OED doesn't have a very good entry.
From the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, 24 September 1964, pg. 26, cols. 1-3:

_INSIDE REPORT: "Lesser of Two Evils"_
By Rowland Evans and Robert Novak

--------------------------------------------------------
FLAMING LIBERAL & POLITICAL PORNOGRAPHY

A nice cartoon of "Flaming Liberal" Hubert Humphrey is in the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, 24 October 1964, pg. 12, cols. 3-5. I can't easily find who first said this burning epithet.
"Political Pornography" is in the editorial cartoon in the NYHT, 23 October 1964, pg. 22, cols. 3-5.

--------------------------------------------------------
LITTLE OLD LADY IN SNEAKERS

I think SAFIRE'S NEW POLITICAL DICTIONARY records this. The "little old lady in sneakers" was the "soccer mom" political woman of that year.
Two cartoons are in the NYHT, 13 July 1964, pg. 23, col. 1, and 10 September 1964, pg. 21, col. 1.

--------------------------------------------------------
BALDERSTON BOUNCE

   Similar to a "Greenspan Put."
From the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, 18 September 1964, pg. 27, col. 3:

   _Further Reaction to "Balderston Bounce"_
_U. S. Bonds Advance Second Straight Day_
By Robert J. Duffy
   U. S. Treasury bond prices recorded their second straight advance yesterday in what might be termed a furtherance of the "Balderston bounce." (...)
With apologies to C. Canby Balderston, the highly respected vice-chairman of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, it seems that a few remarks of his earlier this week, according to most market men, have been responsible for the slight turnaround in the market.

--------------------------------------------------------
NO-LOAD MUTUAL FUND

   OED also has 1964.
From the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, 15 July 1964, pg. 28, col. 2:

_"No Load" Mutual Funds_
_--An SEC Ad Yardstick_

--------------------------------------------------------
THE TURK (continued)

From the NEW YORK magazine of the SUNDAY HERALD TRIBUNE, "The King and The Turk," 11 October 1964, pg. 15, col. 1:

The Turk constitutes one of professional football's crude symbolisms. When the squad roster must be cut, when men who have worked hard and dreamed heartily must be released, the players talk of an impending visit by The Turk--i.e. 'hatchetmen," "axe-swinger."

--------------------------------------------------------
WHO OWNS NEW YORK?

I forgot to record it, but the NYHT did a real estate series titled "Who Owns New York."
From a Yankees-Mets exhibition game (also used recently after the subway series), NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, 25 August 1964, pg. 22, cols. 6-8:

_Who Owns N.Y.?_
_Y-A-N-K-E-E-S_

--------------------------------------------------------
MISC.

6 July 1964, NYHT, pg. 14, col. 3 editorial cartoon caption--"Tell Me if That Isn't Perfectly Clear!"
("Eye doctor" LBJ to Reuther. Nixon would also use "perfectly clear"--ed.)

15 August 1964, NYHT editorial, pg. 10, col. 1--_The Carpetbagger_.
(Used for RFK's NY Senate run. Influenced by the Harold Robbins' novel THE CARPETBAGGER, which then was playing as a film--ed.)

30 August 1964, NEW YORK magazine of the NYHT, pg. 7, col. 2--_The Fifth Beatle_.
(Tom Wolfe story about disc jockey Murray the K--ed.)

16 September 1964, NYHT, pg. 19, cols. 1-2--_England Is Swinging_.

27 October 1964, NYHT, pg. 23, col. 1--_The Fun Couple_.
(Alas, not the Clintons--ed.)
