I suggest to my students that they just avoid the issue by using the
plural whenever they can, lest someone be terminally offended by what many
on this list have cited as an old, if not totally honorable, usage. Doug
Wilson suggested the use of the passive, which is another refuge--although
there will always be those who rant against the use of the passive. Pretty
soon, it seems, there won't be much of this language left to use; maybe
complaining about grammar issues will be the answer to those front-page
articles in yesterday's NYT: Everyone will be so disgusted by the ranting
that it [neutral pronoun to replace he/she] will go back to using German,
French, etc., which used to be pretty effective in international
communication.
