The rook is referred to as a man, and in most chess sets the rook is either a
tower of a castle or less commonly an elephant with a tower on its back.

Hence if "man" can include the inanimate, why should it not in this case
include the feminine?

P.S. from Gilbert and Sullivan's "Princess Ida", Lady Blanche denouces a
chess set as "They're men with which you give each other mate."
