At URL  http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/embankment/1388/jnopaprs.htm, which
consists of documents 1756-1847 of one John Nance of Grainger Co, Tennessee,
the following document is included:

<quote>

I this day Sell and confirm to JOHN NANCE a Small Ireland
Caled the Calf Ireland on holston River Jefferson County
East Tennessee for the Valuation of Sixty Dollars this 3d
day of april 1847
attest                    Joseph [? - apparently a surname]
[C ?] Nance

 </quote>

Obviously "Ireland" is the seller's own spelling of "island".

Has anyone on this list ever encountered the substitution of "Ireland" for
"island" (other than in the deliberate malapropism in the Subject line)?

It makes for an interesting piece of imagery ("This is not a small piece of
land within the Holston River but rather my own private Emerald Isle").
