The U.S. Marine Corps is developing a non-lethal directed-energy weapon that
deters attackers with two-second bursts of energy that heat the moisture in
their skin.
According to a story first reported by the Marine Corps Times Monday, the
weapon, named the Vehicle-Mounted Active Denial System, a form of energy
similar to microwave and radio waves, to create a burning sensation similar
to a hot light bulb pressed against the flesh.
The weapon's range remains classified, although project officials reportedly
expect it to exceed 750 meters (about 2,250 feet), putting soldiers operating
the weapon beyond the reach of most small-arms fire.
The beam does not penetrate below the skin and is supposed to leave no
long-term effects. The U.S. military says possible applications for the
device include crowd control, perimeter defense or ship self-defense.
The weapon could be mounted atop military vehicles for peacekeeping or
aircraft-mounted, according to the Marine Corps Times report.
