English as a lingua franca

Thanks, Paul: what a fascinating and
thought-sparking topic ! I've forwarded
it to a library-school mailing- list I'm on
as well, as one profession that will have
to remain aware...

This research also raises questions about
other emerging varieties of English in Africa
and the Pacific region: will they undergo
some of the same processes in their own
contexts; and has there been any research
on those varieties ? Never mind bands....
what implications arise from the battle of
the Englishes ?

(At least the French can take comfort
in the term "lingua franca.")
