'Mountain boomer' and Yellowhammer

Perhaps to touch base with the avian
origins of this thread:
Doing an undergraduate paper on
"shitepoke" 30 years ago, I was surpri-
sed to discover that the term was long-
established for the blue heron. (I knew
only my family's use in affectionate dis-
paragement of a child).
More to the current discussion, a corres-
pondent in east-central Indiana (as I recall)
wrote that in his area, "yellowhammer" was
applied both to a field bird deemed noisy and
obnoxious, and to local "white trash."
