I believe several weeks ago while I was away the suffix "-stan" was topical. George Stewart (_Names on the Globe_) offers "the Persian common word for land." A Lithuanian website recently defined the element as Slavic for "government or camp." Will anyone be so kind as to retrieve ADS's definitive translation from memory's archives? Paul Kusinitz
