Dollars to Doughnuts

 Back to doughnuts.  As best as I can figure out, a "plugged nickel" is a nickel with a hole in the middle (presumably produced by a pistol bullet).
If such a ring of metal is a metaphor for worthlessness, would the doughnut also have managed to creep into this metaphor?

Dollars to doughnuts...3:1 odds these days if we're talking about actual doughnuts...although not too long ago it was more like 5:1 odds...
