    Here's one more from the same 1818 book:

Pg. 620:  ...Hungarian gall-nuts, called _Knoppern_.
(OED has 1879--ed.)

    I was looking up the Hungarian dish "mate," but couldn't find that.  Interesting is the chess "mate," which the revised OED has from only the 1300s.  Why no Arabic, as in "Shah Mat," the king is dead?
    And why does OED only twice cite from the classic book THE HISTORY OF CHESS by H. J. R. Murray?  A problem in the Murray family, perhaps?
