It's new to me too, but Google turns up some 5000 websites that use the
term. Usenet has posts talking about "mailrings" going back to 1997.

I am familiar with the term "web ring," a series of websites about a subject
that are all interlinked via html code. Fan sites are often organized into
web rings. By clicking on the web ring link, you are hyperlinked to the next
website in the "ring."
