I wonder how many more such there are.  I know "the U" in the Seattle
area = the University of Washington.  In his Alex Delaware novels set
in L.A., Jonathan Kellerman regularly refers to UCLA as "the U", but
I think that's just to avoid naming it.  Nobody there ever calls it
that, in my experience.
