Raised in California, educated in Massachusetts, long resident in Iowa
greasy and vaseline both /s/ (no voicing whatever... always thought I was
pretty close to a mainline standard American speaker). Father-in-law was
born in Quincy, MA (/s/) and somewhere east of here is a place called
Quincy, IL (/z/). I think /s/ for both is general in eastern Iowa... or
was this a discussion among Appalachianians? - Jan
