Some other terms have strong affect: for years Ohio Univ students strongly
preferred {SACK} over {BAG} for the "paper container of groceries" but
starting in the 90s {SACK} and its association with "testicles" started a
preference for {BAG}. Non-Midland students strongly reject positive
anymore. Sub, hoagie, hero, grinder sometimes elicit strong preferences. I
think a lot of students attending college away from home find familiar
dialect items ridiculed and attacked and respond accordingly. I still
remember the reception of my [U + schwa] in words like "chocholate" when I
was a Syracuse freshman in '58!!! So, in [self-]righteous indignation I
could attack "Where you at?"
