Yes, many of the news reports do attribute the name to retailers going into the black, and this may have been a factor in the term's acceptance, but the earliest cites seem to derive the term from its use to indicate a bad traffic day.

By way of explanation, since I haven't seen this said explicitly on the
list (or did I miss it?) -- according to the discussion on Slashdot, it's
called Black Friday because it's said to be the day that many retailers
finally get into the black (become profitable) for the year.
