Here's my dad's response:

As a preteen [in pre-1942 PA], along with other kids of the
same age I would use that expression (but not 'collect') when
we saw a car with one light.  Don't recall where I learned
it.  Later when of dating age, I would occasionally try to
collect [a kiss].  Of course, until now, I never knew there
were other [non-kissing] spins on the game. Wild!
