"Mango" for Green Peppers

Hello:

I was remembering that my mother from Eastern Pennsylvania used to
call green peppers "mangos". Her friend from Indiana did the same,
and I have also heard that it was used in Ohio.

Does anyone know the origin of this use of "mango"?
