In 1966-67, IIRC, I was offered an appointment in the anthropology
department at Brooklyn College. They wanted a social anthropologist who
could teach some courses in linguistic anthro, and I qualified.
(Besides that, an old friend was on the search committee . . . )

After some thought, I accepted another offer. I told my friend that part
of my reason was that I didn't want to have to tell the world I had
become a CUNY linguist.
