"slang" and "informal" as dict labels

Is this really the case? My firm's headquarters and almost all of its employees are in Philadelphia's Center City (i.e., downtown), and they refer constantly to Philly. I've now started calling it Philly too, a usage that formerly I encountered only rarely. I suppose it's possible that they're using it as a sort of secret shibboleth, calling it Philly when talking to me and other out-of-towners but Philadelphia when talking among themselves, but, frankly, that seems unlikely.

Similar to the dislike of Philly among Philadelphians.
