More on "Colby" for you Wisconsin cheeseheads. The following trademark
record says 1885, but a cheese sold at my local D'agostino market has "since
1882" on it. This is the City of Colby's take as well: Keep in mind that a
senator gave an "1874" Colby cheese date on the Senate floor.
"Colby" is not in the OED (No!), not in DARE, and not in the DICTIONARY OF
AMERICANISMS.
The first "Vidalia" onion trademark record is 1972, but I'm still poking
around trademarks. The site had "connection refused" a few days ago.
