A client of my father's used to say, "No matter how you twist and
turn, it all comes out in the wash."
But closer, I think, to what the question referred to, a very
idiosynchratic response: My husband had a bathrobe made that sort of
looks like his doctoral gown. He wore it as a costume at one point,
and a friend commented: "Ah a man of the terry cloth."
