Belgian fries/frites (1977, 1999)

   OED has no entry for "Belgian fries/frites."  It's sort of been in the news.  It's been said that these are the real "French" fries, but the NEW YORK TIMES hits and four trademark records are very recent:


   30 October 1977, NEW YORK TIMES, pg. 293:
   ...and a pepper steak second to none, with Belgian fries and a salad followed by chocolate mousse.
