   A pocket dictionary of 335 pages.  It has some French terms, with little
German, Italian, or Spanish.  It goes on and on about some things,  like
"mutton a la--."  A few gems.

Beef steak, carpet bag, or steak a la Chateau-briand--rump split, filled with
oyster sauce and broiled.
(From John Mariani's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN FOOD AND DRINK:  "A grilled
steak of beef into which is cut a pocket enclosing a stuffing of oysters. ...
In fact, the carpetbag steak is much more popular in Australia and is only
mentioned for the first time in American print in 1941 in Louis Diat's
_Cooking a la Ritz_.  Although there is no proof the dish originated at
Chasen's restaurant in Los Angeles, which opened in 1936, it did become one
of the restaurant's signature dishes.")
