Location: New York, New York (NOTE: This is not a telecommuting
position)

Oxford University Press is hiring an entry-level lexicographer
for a long-term project in its lexical reference
division. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly
committed individual to be involved with a major project at
the world's largest academic publisher. The employee will,
after training, have a significant role in the editorial
process, as well as responsibility for supplementary projects.

Responsibilities/Duties:

* Writing new entries for historical and modern American
English terms

* Editing draft entries for such terms

* Doing research on terms and on various aspects of American
history and culture

* Working closely with other lexicographers to ensure
proper and uniform coverage

* Keeping to a tight schedule, and ensuring that other people
involved in the project (production, marketing) do likewise

* Developing and managing other projects related to the
main one

Qualifications:

The successful candidate should have undergraduate or graduate
training in the humanities (preferably English), and a strong
interest in lexicography. A clear, elegant writing style and
the ability to analyze complex entries and writings accurately
and rapidly are essentials for the post.  He or she should be
able to work independently without distraction, and should
have a good knowledge of and interest in American language,
history and culture, especially popular culture. A willingness
to work in an electronic editing environment is required.
