My father used the term in our house while I was growing up in Los Angeles,
at least around the same time.  The sound of it makes me think it came from the
Marine Corps, and while I am not sure if this is where he got it, my
recollection is that is what he told me when I asked him about it.  If so, then it was
extant in 1951-53, when my father served in the Corps at Cherry Point, NC.
