Anyway, I notice that the "grandmother" site includes "Statts (?)"
indicating  to me the present editor is reading from a handwritten or very
badly typed original.  Surely the word intended is "static," possibly the
earliest attestation in the sense of unwanted talk.

I see "slat=young man"

The cite that first came from Barry, in the Edwardsville Intelligencer, is
merely that paper's reading of the dictionary, many cites from which had
been published previously in multiple papers, available on Newpaperarchive.
