WHERE DID BARRY POPIK EAT?--I thought that the Donut Factory (next to
Kossar's Bialy on Grand Street) would make some extra batches of its treats for
Christmas, but when I arrived, every single donut was sold out.

I wound up buying s book, DONUT: THE WHOLE STORY IN WORDS, PICTURES &
OUTRAGEOUS TALES (2004) by Sally Levitt Steinberg. The "Optimists' Creed" that  I've
found from 1930 ("Keep your eye upon the doughnut and not upon the hole")  is
on the first page. I thought this was simply a reprint of her 1980s book, but
 this book doesn't seem to state that.

I wandered around Chinatown and heard "Silent Night" in Chinese. I ate  at
South & North Dumplings, 27 Rutgers Street. The vegetarian dumplings are  eight
for...two dollars!


I also went to Aji Ichibam ("Munchies Paradise") (_www.Ajiichiban-usa.com_
(http://www.Ajiichiban-usa.com) ) on East  Broadway. Also a few Chinese
bakeries, the Hong Kong Supermarket on Pike Street  (American Christmas songs while
you shop), and had some Hong Kong-style milk tea  (they add milk and cream).

1/2 ts  Salt

Green onions;  for garnish
SWEET AND PUNGENT SAUCE
4 1/2 tb Sugar
4 1/2 tb Catsup
1/4 c  Vinegar
1/2 ts Salt
1  tb Sherry
1/2 ts Cornstarch

2 lg Garlic cloves; minced
3/4 ts  Minced fresh ginger root

A reader who requested the recipe for a sweet and
pungent shrimp from the  Panda Inn in Pasadena won the
everlasting thanks of our tasting panel.  Because it's
as impossible to eat just one of these as it is to eat
a  single kernel of popcorn, the recipe is often called
Chinese popcorn.
