The 1932 Chicago Tribune "hit" was bad.
I also saw the Charlie Brown attribution on Google. Ben Zimmer is a good
man. But what date is it from? And what date did Joe E. Lewis use the phrase
(surely in the 1940s or 1950s)?
Anyway, here's Senator Muskie:
5 April 1972, Washington Post, pg. A8:
Muskie said of his fourth place finish here: "You know they say winning
isn't everything, but I must say losing isn't anything."
