The author also comes to the conclusion that it originated with Red Sanders.
However, in it, Fred Russell says it goes back to the 1930s when Sanders was
at Riverside Academy in Georgia, not Columbia Military Academy.

I've emailed the author, Steve Overman, at Jackson State Univ., and told him
of Barry Popik's 1950 LA Times quote of Sanders using the phrase.
