Yes, the word for fox is very close in pronunication.

Fox: Sionnach (Sheeng-akh):


A very common name in Gaeltacht for fox, as you probably know,  is also
Madadh Rua, lit. "red  dog," or fig. "wild dog," which is the title of a song
spelled phonetically "Moidideroo" in Eugene O'Neill's  Touch of the Poet.
