M-W and OED have 1929, and in a gadget sense.  The music comes later.

31 March, 1921.  Newark(OH) Advocate. page ?, column 2.  (In an article
detailing the schedule of the Dennison University Glee Club):

     <<Five members will present a comedy sketch, written by Robert
Abernathy, entitled "The King of the Hootenanny.">>

I suppose this could be a musical sense or the gadget sense.  Perhaps
Dennison would have something in their files?
