Hundred Mile Stare. Etc.

FWIW, putting Hundred Mile Stare into Google with quotes give 43 hits;
"thousand yard stare" (which is the way I remembered it) gives 'about 5110'
although many seem to be about a song with that title; adding "war" cuts it
to 1900 or so. One cites a painting from Peleliu (1943?) at
http://www.milhist.net/global/2000yard.shtml and an apparent older reference
of "Vietnam generally meaning "Over the Edge" o, 'Thousand yard stare' The
expression noted on soldiers returning from the trenches in the first world
war" at http://www.proz.com/?sp=h&id=576172 although the site is presently
down.

This and similar variations have become cliches for facial expressions
of trauma victims. Any pointers to their historical orgins?
