I see that no-one has yet mentioned the "cheese toastie" variant that is, I
think, almost as common in the UK as "toasted cheese sandwich", at least among
college students. When I was at college in England, inviting fellow students
over for a cheese toastie (made in a George Foreman-style 'toastie maker') was
as much a ritual as inviting them for a cup of tea.
