Don't know whther this may be of interest to Barry.
>From a forthcoming local history of Thurrock in the 30s (Essex, UK):
'In February 1938 the latest American dance craze to reach Grays was called
The Big Apple¹; it was performed, for the first time in Essex¹ by Mr and
Mrs Wal E. La Thangue with members of the Grays and District Dance Club.
The ladies wore short white frocks festooned with huge apples and large red
bows in their hair, while the men wore evening dress, horn-rimmed spectacles
and long ³sideboard² whiskers¹. Little information is given about the dance
except that it involved fancy steps¹ and acrobatic stunts¹.'
