As everyone knows, there is a deep pocket of post-vocalic-r-loss in East
Central Iowa, where I was reared, especially in the pronunciation of Romanian
names.

(Is "reared" still polite language, or is it now considered obliquely
obscene, like the "Yankees Suck" tee-shirts that have been banned from the Boston
Ball Park?)
