Considering how widespread commerce in fowl of all sorts is (as evidenced
by the world-wide alarm about bird flu recently) it's no wonder that there
is confusion among the terms used to designate various classes.  There may
be "standards of identity" in the FDA, for instance, for birds destined for
the table of different ages.   Roger Tory Peterson  had a plate in an early
edition of his famous bird guide simply titled "Chicken-like birds."  My
alter ego, "sagehen," can refer to either the male or female of
/Centrocercus/ in common parlance, & either may be called "sage grouse," or
they may be  distinguished m from f  by "grouse" & "hen" respectively.
