We've discussed this restructuring in the past, most thoughtfully in
Arnold's post of 6/26/04 on "the thin line between error and mere
variation". There are indeed many hits for the construction on
google (170K raw ghits, including those objecting to it), but it
usually gets edited out of more formal contexts. Here's one I just
noticed in the Times, in a letter to the editor published last
Sunday. (Nicely fortuitious co-occurrence with Safire!)
