In case you missed it, the first NYPL digitization project is 1900-1910 of
the New York Tribune. Knowing the NYPL, this will take about ten years to
complete. Why just this?

Tribune (1900-1910) to ProQuest Historical NewspapersTM
Digitization of Historic Newspaper Expands Avenues for Progressive Era
Research
ANN ARBOR, Mich., October 23, 2006 -- ProQuest Information and Learning has
partnered with The New York Public Library to add the New York Tribune from
1900-1910 to ProQuest Historical Newspapers, enabling cross searches with
other distinguished newspapers on the ProQuest platform. Regarded as one of the
most avant-garde newspapers of its time, the New York Tribune achieved major
influence at the turn of the 20th century, and adds unique perspectives to
research on a wide range of historical, political and social issues.
"By digitizing newspapers, we are able to preserve and provide increased
access to the rich history of our state," said Heike Kordish, Director of the
Humanities and Social Science Libraries for The New York Public Library.
"ProQuest has vast experience in addressing the unique challenges of digitizing
historical newspaper content from microfilm. By making the New York Tribune
cross-searchable with other historical newspapers on the ProQuest platform we
are expanding the research value of this vital resource."
