kype

[Nancy Friedman]

All the cool kids at my large Los Angeles elementary school (late 1950s)
used this word to mean "filch." Kyping wasn't quite as serious an offense as
stealing.
 
I've often wondered whether the voice-over-Internet phone service Skype
(www.skype) was a portmanteau of "sky" and "kype."
