I rather think they're overdriving the word "overdriving"! But I
suspect your guess is right, if only because I can't think of
anything else it could sensibly mean in that context.

Why don't we do to Mr. Atkind exactly, in order, what he did to the
dog, and in the process discover the missing signified?
