Gay White Way vs Great White Way

I'm hoping, because your name popped up when I was
googling for information on this issue, that you
may be able to shed some, um, light on when the 'gay'
was changed to 'great'. (I see from the note in which
your name appeared that some folk are back to using the
earlier moniker.)
Any help will be appreciated.
