I've heard this off & on  -- usually from people, black & white, of my
generation or older -- in different parts of the  country, so I can't
suggest a region.  What does strike me, as I think about it,  is that it
nearly always has been in reference to a vehicle radiator, never to a
domestic hot water central heating system radiator.  These always seem to
have been RAYdiators.
