More severe than life-threatening?

Heard on Boston radio today in reference to an accident: there were
no "severe life-threatening injuries."

There are some Google hits without an intervening comma -- such as
"severe life threatening asthma", which even has its own initialism
(SLTA), "... maxillofacial infection," "... malaria," "...
Hyponatremia during Paroxetine Therapy". But I'm wondering how many
of these are simply mistakes, the omission of a needed comma.
