A glance at US popular culture: Dagwood Bumstead used this "cut out" (v.i.)
= "leave" (in 1975). So did other conventional comic strip characters.
When/where I grew up, as I recall, this "cut out" was routine among all
races and religions ... maybe with some male predominance, though?
HDAS shows it from way back, of course.
