Searching Google Web for <<"land of the big onion">> yields one item:
the reference is to Chicago.

Searching N'archive for <<"land of the big onion">> yields a few
items from 1907: in all of them, the reference is to Atlee, Texas.

Searching Google Books for <<"land of the big onion">> yields two items.

One is from 1939 (or maybe it's 1981): the reference is to Walla Walla.

The other is from 1882, in a memoir [supposedly] of 1831-1838: the
reference is to Portugal (the European country).
