New "lumpkin," "girney"

May or may not be relevant: German has "(der) Lump," which can mean "rascal" and can be used endearingly. I remember reading a German comic book some twenty years ago with the dachshund character "Lumpi." A check of Google ("Lumpi, dachshund) also turns up some relevant items.

Regarding "lumpkin" as a term of endearment for a child: Could it represent a blend--perhaps of "lambkin" and "pumpkin" (or "love" and "pumpkin")?
