"Check us in"

Can anyone help me identify when the phrase "checking in" became routine
when discussing staying at hotels or inns. The phrase shows up in the new
western 3:10 to Yuma and it jars there as though it were 20th century
language in a 19th century setting. But maybe I'm wrong.
