Mere speculation: since "living the life of Riley" appeared in the US in 1911,
1918
and 1919 (in ads-l archives), might it refer to the US gambler and "dead game
sport" Riley Grannan (1868-April 1908)?

(Though a Richmond Times-Dispatch headline is not probative, it made me wonder:
