I wonder what the DARE files say, if anything. Possibly AMERICAN SPEECH had a note on this over the years. Or DIALECT NOTES, though the OED folks usually check those resources (and NOTES&QUERIES).

Oddly enough, I'm familiar with this word in this meaning. I don't remember
where I picked it up. (Stand up. Seven steps. Consult. Return to keyboard.)
Probably from dictionary browsing. Amer. Heritage, 3e, has it as "one who
carves scrimshaw".
